Indeed, I am amazed at how this great wealth has made its home in this poverty. Most of the papyri are from Oxyrhynchus and were written in Greek; there are a few hundred each in Egyptian hieroglyphic, hieratic, demotic, mostly CopticLatin and Arabic, and a very few in Hebrew and Aramaic, Syriac and Pahlavi.
For ten years, from toevery winter, when the Egyptian climate was mild, Grenfell and Hunt supervised hundreds of Egyptian workers, excavating the rubbish mounds, digging up tightly packed layers of papyrus mixed with earth.
